…’Grand Theft Auto IV’ delivers more than mayhem: review
Just so we’re clear, “Grand Theft Auto IV” is not for the kids. It’s rated “M” for mature, so people under 17 shouldn’t be able to buy it. It has lots of blood, some nudity and a nearly constant stream of filthy language. And it’s very entertaining…
“GTA” is mostly about driving, and Rockstar has made some big improvements. You always have access to a GPS-like device that shows you the best route to your target. You can choose between several different camera angles, although I pretty much stuck with viewing the road from Nico’s point of view. And the car damage feels more realistic; you can only plow into so many Jersey walls before your performance starts to suffer.
Rockstar doesn’t pull off everything it tries to do. There are certainly better fighting, shooting and yes, bowling games out there. If all you care about is high-speed urban driving, there’s always “Burnout Paradise.” But if you want all of that, along with a dose of satire and a fascinating story (at least for the eight hours I’ve seen so far), you won’t want to miss “GTA IV.” You’re unlikely to find a more ambitious game this year.Three-and-a-half stars out of four.

…The game reviewers are heaping praise on Grand Theft Auto IV, which went on sale at midnight. It’s sure to be the biggest thing in games this year. The only question was if the new offering from Take-Two Interactive and its Rockstar subsidiary would set a new record for entertainment sales. The movie Spiderman 3 reportedly holds the first-weekend record at $380 million. Some analysts are predicting that GTA IV could hit $400 million.
And it’s early, but the outcry from critics appears muffled this time. Sure, the Parent Television Council called for retailers to keep the game away from children. And a few minor politicians and gadflies issued harsher condemnations. But so far, and maybe because it’s an election year, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is staying quiet—after having been one of the loudest critics of Grand Theft Auto III, reports Daniel Terdiman at CNet.
GTA IV REVIEW: Review of Grand Theft Auto IV by Xbox Magizine
…It should come as no surprise that the very first review for Grand Theft Auto IV comes to us from a British magazine – the May issue of Official Xbox Magazine UK to be precise. Not only do magazines have a longer lead time but British ones are published in the future (well, five hours ahead of Joystiq Standard Time anyhow). While one review isn’t nearly enough to go on, it’s worth sharing that the mag’s reviewer used every one of his digits to award the ambitious next-gen debut of GTA IV an impressive 10 out of 10, calling it “utterly stunning in every respect.”
Of course, he doesn’t really mean “every” respect, as there are a couple minor detractions including a temperamental cover system, an “over-enthusiastic” lock-on, and some immersion-killing pop-up, though he prefaces those quibbles by reminding us he was playing a not-quite-finished version. Either way, if the myriad previews haven’t convinced you of this game’s depth, news that the Xbox 360-exclusive DLC – scheduled to be released in August – will “be at least 10 hours long” should help give you some sense of perspective. …Stepping off a boat in the shoes of illegal immigrant Niko Bellic as he arrives in Liberty City at the start of Grand Theft Auto IV, you can tell immediately that Rockstar North’s latest offering is something quite special. Yes, this is another GTA game in which you’ll likely spend the bulk of your time stealing cars and gunning down cops and criminals, but it’s also much more than that. GTAIV is a game with a compelling and nonlinear storyline, a game with a great protagonist who you can’t help but like, and a game that boasts a plethora of online multiplayer features in addition to its lengthy story mode. It’s not without some flaws, but GTAIV is undoubtedly the best Grand Theft Auto yet.

In case you haven’t guessed already, Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that you simply have to play. The single-player game, which you can still play long after you complete the story, is the series’ best by far, and the multiplayer features are good enough that you’ll likely have no problem finding people to play with for many months to come. The minor flaws that you’ll experience are no more difficult to overlook than those in previous GTA games, and they’re greatly outnumbered by the features that will impress and surprise you anytime you think you’ve already seen everything that the game has to offer. There’s lots to see in Liberty City, so you’d best get started.

…It all adds up to a new level of depth for an interactive entertainment experience. I’ve spent almost 60 hours practically sequestered in a (real world) Manhattan hotel room in recent weeks playing through Grand Theft Auto IV’s main story line and the game still says I have found only 64 percent of its content. I won’t ever reach 100 percent, not least because I won’t hunt down all 200 of the target pigeons (known as flying rats here) that the designers have hidden around the city.
But like millions of other players I will happily spend untold hours cruising Liberty City’s bridges and byways, hitting the clubs, grooving to the radio and running from the cops. Even when the real New York City is right outside.
So, things are looking really good for Grand Theft Auto 4. Once we start hearing about GTA cheats and codes we’ll post them here…. Till then, enjoy Liberty City.
