Viruses Cause Everything!
Recent studies show connections between Viruses and both Alzheimers and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Can the link between viruses and more diseases be far behind?
Not too long ago it was ridiculous (it literally brought ridicule) to suggest ulcers could be a primary cause of ulcers. It’s now a no longer debated fact. More recently, HPV, Human Papilloma Virus, has been shown to cause cervical and other cancers . If cells stay infected with HPV, the virus may cause the cells of the cervix to change and become pre-cancer cells. (There is now a vaccine for the HPV virus).
In recent months, two other very serious ailments have been linked to viruses. The New York Times had a story recently about an article published in Science, showing that 67% of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferers tested were found to be infected with an infectious virus, xenotropic murine leukemia-related virus, or XMRV:
“The syndrome, which causes prolonged and severe fatigue, body aches and other symptoms, has long been a mystery ailment, and patients have sometimes been suspected of malingering or having psychiatric problems rather than genuine physical ones. Worldwide, 17 million people have the syndrome, including at least one million Americans.”
And Science Daily reports that Alzheimer’s disease, expected to become an increasingly devastating epidemic as populations age, is strongly linked to the wide-spread herpes simplex virus, the same virus that causes cold sores:
They believe the herpes simplex virus is a significant factor in developing the debilitating disease and could be treated by antiviral agents such as acyclovir, which is already used to treat cold sores and other diseases caused by the herpes virus. Another future possibility is vaccination against the virus to prevent the development of the disease in the first place.
It seems a certainty that in the coming months and years, more diseases, previously believed to be unrelated to viruses, will be shown to be caused or significantly worsened by them. Any predictions what will be next?
