Finding
the right online seminary or school of religion for your religious
studies, Ministry, Divinity or related Masters or Doctorate
degree.
The
jury is still out regarding which online programs are as effective as
traditional classroom based education and which ones are not. For
instance, there is no doubt that becoming a good spiritual counselor or
therapist requires hands-on experience, practicing and learning
one-on-one in person. Whereas learning computer programming is a
natural for online studies. So, what about religious studies,
ministry and a Master or Doctor of Divinity? It really gets down to
what your goals, purposes and intentions are, as well as the kind of
program you want to enter. Many ministry classes and religous
courses are related to other people and require some degree of
interaction, leadership, etc. Others are more knowledge based, or
self-inquiry based. There are certainly some good programs which
offer at least part of their coursework online, often with a required
two week (or so) on campus seminar once or twice to complete the
program.
As you begin to research which programs may be right for you, be sure
to look beneath the website and brochures- find out how respected the
program is, and try to talk with graduates. Does it open the
doors you want to open in your career and in your life? Does it
accomplish what you want your religious studies or Spiritual counseling
program to accomplish? Will future employers, clients or boards
find your diploma and your ministry degree or religious studies
legitimate and respected?
Naturally, the other very important consideration is which online
seminary or ministry program of religious studies fits your own
particular faith the best. While it can be good to be stretched
by exploring other perspectives, most people have a natural preference
to pursue their religious studies or seminary degree at a school or
online program that has a similar faith perspective. It could be
the best college in the world, but if you feel it isn't supporting your
own growth professionally, personally and spiritually, is that the best
place for you to get a religious studies degree?
These are good questions to keep in mind as you search several options
to find the online school of religion or religious studies program
that is right for you.
