On-line College Degrees and Accredited Degree Programs:What you should knowIf you are considering getting an on-line college degree from an on-line program, the first question is which one to choose? There are more on-line degrees available on-line now than ever before, and it's growing every day. The most important consideration is to choose a distance education program that you trust- that has an excellent reputation and a proven history of graduates finding good jobs. Many "accredited" online colleges are accredited by an accreditation body that isn't recognized by state education boards. They sound impressive- but they aren't worth much. This is particularly true with on-line life experience degrees. You no doubt have learned much thru life experience, but the question is, will future employers and others recognize your diploma from an online life experience college as valuable? The truth is, most do not. And employers are becoming more adept at finding out which degrees are state-board-certified. So, fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view, there are no real shortcuts to a government-accredited online diploma. It will take time, work and money, or it likely won't stand up to scrutiny. With that in mind, one of the safest ways to ensure a quality on-line school diploma is to choose a program from a college that already offers traditional classroom-based classes, and has a long history and good reputation. More traditional universities are adding on-line courses every month, so it isn't hard to find one in the program area and major you want to pursue your degree in. There are a handful of strictly online college programs which are generally respected, so if you decide to go that route, make sure they are accredited, respected and that their graduates have been able to benefit from their degrees. Don't just take the admissions counselor's statements as fact. Most are great people, but they are usually working via commission, and sometimes that can lead to some subtle or blatant misrepresentation. Funny Graduation Jokes and StoriesWouldn't it be nice to tell the Dean of your college what you REALLY think about him/her? Well, if you like YOUR Dean as much as I like MY Dean, then you'd better keep your mouth shut. I knew I'd get kicked out of the college if I expressed my true feelings, so I remained silent for the last four years. But yesterday was my graduation. And as I walked across the stage, the Dean handed my diploma to me (nicely scrolled and tied with a ribbon). Once she handed it to me, I could finally tell that bitch what I REALLY thought about her. So I leaned across her podium and I looked her straight in the eye. "Hey loser!" I said. "You're so damn ugly,... you could practice birth control just by leaving the lights on!" And then I walked off the stage, and went home. I gotta tell you that it felt just as good as I had imagined it would for the last four years. Today, I unwrapped my diploma, framed it, and hung it in the living room, where it proudly exclaims to the world: "In order to receive your diploma, please present this certificate to the Dean of your college after final grades have been posted!" |
