![]() ![]() ![]() The truth about fast life experience diplomas and degrees for a masters, doctor or PhD.Not too long ago, those three magic letters after your name- PhD- and the Dr. before your name, was a passport to respect. Over the last few years however, that is beginning to change. A growing response is a suspicious "From where?" if not spoken outloud, at least thought. The news is full of high-level government officials, CEO's and others who have fallen from grace and lost their jobs because it was later discovered their credentials and their resume were doctored. In some cases, they flat out lied. In others, they bought their degree from a diploma mill, rather than actually earned it through traditional graduate degree coursework. With so many online schools offering PhD and Masters Degrees, and more coming online every month, it isn't always easy to separate the good the bad and the ugly. But if you are considering a life experience degree online, be aware that more people than ever before will meet it with suspicion rather than respect or reverence. And potential employers can easily check online databases to find out if a degree is from a recognized accredited online institution of higher learning. The key word there is recognized, because every school claims to be accredited by someone. But is it recognized by the state board of higher education and other national or state official recognition bodies regarding accreditation of colleges and universities? There is a very very very high chance that if you can get a degree with little or no further coursework, based on your very real and valuable life experience, that program is NOT recognized by official and formal recognition bodies. It isn't that your life experince isn't very valuable, it's that there must be some form of control and evaluation to distinguish "good" onlne degree schools from "bad" ones, and those systems which are in place to accomplish this involve a certain dgree of difficulty, time and coursework which life-experience universities online don't qualify for. There are, however, some good onlie degree colleges, universities and schools which do give some credit for life experience- but expect it be much less than half of all required credits. So, it's really just about making an informed decision and understanding the risks. If you are comfortable with possible future employers or others researching your educational history and discovering the minimal requirements of the onlin program and college institution from which you purchased or earned your dgree, it may be that a quick life experience degee with a fast diploma is the way you want to go. But there's a saying, there are no shortcuts in life on the roads that matter. (Actually, I think I just made that up, but the idea has been around...). So if you want to build a solid educational foundation which helps you move foward confidently in your future endeavors, consider the slow route. It is more expensive, more effort it takes longer and when you are done, you really know you have accomplished something. And so will everyone else. having a PhD degree, and having Dr. in front of your name, was a way to immediately impress anyone, including possible employers. In recent years, it isn't so much that a good PhD no longer evokes that kind of respect, it's more that people have grown suspicious of degrees. And with good reason. The diploma mill industry- business that provide fast accredited diplomas and degrees- has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. And the media regularly has stories of CEO's, government officials and others who were fired because it was discovered there degee wasn't actually from a "real" university or school. So buying a degree or diploma, or entering a fast online program which gives a great deal of credit for life experience- doesn't always get the mileage it once did. And the term "accredited" is misleading, because anyone can create an impressive sounding organization which accredits. Shouldn't you be given educational credit for all of your work experience? There is validity to that argument, but PhD degrees suggest a certain level of academic study and focused expertise, and certain standards are in place, rightly or wrongly, regarding what is required to earn the right to use that term and have a doctorate degree. So, as you consider your options for getting a masters or phD doctorate degre or diploma, check out closely if the life experience phD degree and diploma will get the mileage you are hoping. Even a verification call center isn't enough anymore, as employers can easily check online to discover which universities are legit, which aren't, and which are in the middle...
