Online Bachelors Degree Programs online: FAQs you should read before applying.
Ok, so you've got this much figured out: You are ready to consider
advancing your career, or starting a new one, by getting an online
bachelor degree. That's a big step, to even start looking, but it
is just the beginning. Here are some FAQs about applying online for a
bachelors degree program, either thru a traditional college or
university offering online degrees or through an exclusively on-line
college.
Are online university and college bachelors degree programs accredited?
As you migh have
guessed, it depends on the online educational institution and the
bachelor's program. You can find a wide range online- the whole
spectrum- from online diploma mills or life experience degree schools
that take your money and send you a certificate. Sure, you do have some
great life experience, but college bachelor degrees are valuable
because they represent a certain degree of specific work in specific
courses developing specific skills and knowledge. That standard becomes
meaningnless if some people studied for two years in addition to all
their life experience, and some people didn't. So, what really
matters isn't are the online college programs "accredited", but are the
recognized by state education departments? Who are they accredited by,
and is that body recognized by the government, other universities, etc.
That is the key. So, find out WHO accredited the online bachelor
degree program, and make sure the state board of education acknowledges
them as legitimate.
I don't need a real two or three year online bachelors degree. I just need to buy a quick easy bachelor diploma online.
If you are clear
you just want the piece of paper, you can get one in a week or two,
based on life experience and perhaps a quick onlnie diploma test.
However, be sure you are clear what your purpose is. If you are getting
the diploma for present or future employers, be aware that they are
getting smarter about discerning which online bachelors diplomas were
fast and easy and not earned in the traditional sense, and which ones
are fully accredited, recognized and respected. Every month
there's another article in the paper about a well known company CEO or
government leader in a high position, who is found to have been
dishonest or committed fraud on their resume. Often, short cuts
don't pay off, and don't turn out to be truly valuable.
How long do online bachelor degrees take? How fast can I get my bachelor diploma online?
Again, it depends
on the program. Even different accredited and recognized bachelor
degree colleges online have different requirements, etc. Some
even do allow for a limited amount of life experiencce (but if it
sounds too good to be true-- too easy- then it's best to check it out
more closely and make sure the on line college is recognized). It also
depends on the major, whether there has been any previous college-level
credits which could be carried over, etc. It also depends on
whether you are full time, part time, or double time. In
general, it is likely to take anywhere from 8 months to two to three
years. You'll have to find out mor about specific programs and your own
course plan to get a more specific answer.
Continued: Financial aid for online college bachelor degree programs
Can I get scholarships, student loans and government financial aid at an online college bachelor program?
While it is
possible to get some degree of scholarship financial aid at some online
colleges, the odds of this are small (it's still worth checking out,
and applying to them if they exist at the school you choose, of
course). In particular, the odds of getting an athletic scholarship at
an online school are extremely low... As for government student
loans, those are possible for any schools which are recognized as
accredited by FASFA. Other private online schools do have other
types of financial aid in terms of unsecured student loans, but they
don't have the same advantages as government sponsored loans, such as
student loan deferrments and forbearences which can postpone payments,
sometimes with no interest accruing.
