Not too long ago it was ridiculous (it literally brought ridicule) to suggest ulcers could be a primary cause of ulcers.  It’s now a no longer debated fact.   More recently, HPV, Human Papilloma Virus, has been shown to cause cervical and other cancers . If cells stay infected with HPV, the virus may cause the cells of the cervix to change and become pre-cancer cells. (There is now a vaccine for the HPV virus).
In recent months, two other very serious ailments have been linked to viruses.   The New York Times had a story recently about an article published in Science, showing that 67% of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferers tested were found to be infected with an infectious virus, xenotropic murine leukemia-related virus, or XMRV:

“The syndrome, which causes prolonged and severe fatigue, body aches and other symptoms, has long been a mystery ailment, and patients have sometimes been suspected of malingering or having psychiatric problems rather than genuine physical ones. Worldwide, 17 million people have the syndrome, including at least one million Americans.”

And Science Daily reports that Alzheimer’s disease, expected to become an increasingly devastating epidemic as populations age, is strongly linked to the wide-spread herpes simplex virus, the same virus that causes cold sores:

They believe the herpes simplex virus is a significant factor in developing the debilitating disease and could be treated by antiviral agents such as acyclovir, which is already used to treat cold sores and other diseases caused by the herpes virus. Another future possibility is vaccination against the virus to prevent the development of the disease in the first place.

It seems a certainty that in the coming months and years, more diseases, previously believed to be unrelated to viruses, will be shown to be caused or significantly worsened  by them.   Any predictions what will be next?

I’ve been reading about reverse mortgages lately. There are more and more ads popping up about them, and I wondered what they were. It sounds like they provide a legitimate service, but also that more lenders are being unscrupulous about them. Here are a few helpful articles that help give you a solid picture of what HECMs (reverse mortgages) are, and what you should be aware of.

Article One: A Hud article about Reverse Mortgages

Reverse mortgages are becoming popular in America. HUD’s Federal Housing Administration (FHA) created one of the first. The Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) is FHA’s reverse mortgage program which enables you to withdraw some of the equity in your home. The HECM is a safe plan that can give older Americans greater financial security. Many seniors use it to supplement social security, meet unexpected medical expenses, make home improvements and more. You can receive free information about reverse mortgages in general by calling AARP toll free at (800) 209-8085.

What is a reverse mortgage?

A reverse mortgage is a special type of home loan that lets you convert a portion of the equity in your home into cash. The equity that built up over years of home mortgage payments can be paid to you. But unlike a traditional home equity loan or second mortgage, no repayment is required until the borrower(s) no longer use the home as their principal residence. FHA’s HECM provides these benefits. You can also use a HECM to purchase a primary residence if you are able to use cash on hand to pay the difference between the HECM proceeds and the sales price plus closing costs for the property you are purchasing.

Can I qualify for FHA’s HECM reverse mortgage?

To be eligible for a FHA HECM, the FHA requires that you be a homeowner 62 years of age or older, own your home outright, or have a low mortgage balance that can be paid off at closing with proceeds from the reverse loan, and you must live in the home.

What types of homes are eligible?

Your home must be a single family home or a 1-4 unit home with one unit occupied by the borrower. HUD-approved condominiums and manufactured homes that meet FHA requirements are also eligible.

Article two: Wikipedia entry about reverse mortgages

A reverse mortgage (or lifetime mortgage) is a loan available to seniors, and is used to release the home equity in the property as one lump sum or multiple payments. The homeowner’s obligation to repay the loan is deferred until the owner dies, the home is sold, or the owner leaves (e.g., into aged care).

In a conventional mortgage the homeowner makes a monthly amortized payment to the lender; after each payment the equity increases within his or her property, and typically after the end of the term (e.g., 30 years) the mortgage has been paid in full and the property is released from the lender. In a reverse mortgage, the home owner makes no payments and all interest is added to the lien on the property. If the owner receives monthly payments, or a bulk payment of the available equity percentage for their age, then the debt on the property increases each month.

Article three: Reverse-mortgage industry comes under scrutiny

Reverse mortgages are not necessarily a bad idea for homeowners 62 or older who want to cash out decades’ worth of equity.

But some of the people responsible for subprime and predatory lending apparently have turned to the reverse-mortgage business in force, using high-pressure tactics to trap more seniors into giving away everything and getting little in return.

“There are 2,700 [reverse-mortgage lenders] in the market today, and 1,500 of them made their first loans in 2008,” said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.), who has been working on a bill to curb some of the worst abuses – including widening yield-spread premiums that benefit lenders and brokers at the expense of elderly borrowers.

McCaskill was part of a news conference yesterday sponsored by the National Consumer Law Center in Boston, which published a study warning that the reverse-mortgage market shows “systemic problems eerily similar to the subprime boom,” said its author, Tara Twomey.

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway (or, the Privatization of the English Language)

Today I received an email from the lawyers of author Susan Jeffers, PhD., notifying me that I’d infringed on her trademark by inadvertently using the phrase “feel the fear and do it anyway” in my post last week, A Guide to Beating the Fears That Hold You Back.

The phrase, apparently, is the title of one of her books … a book I’d never heard of. I wasn’t referring to her book. I’m not using the phrase as a title of a book or product or to sell anything. I was just referring to something a friend said on Twitter.

Her lawyers asked me to insert the (R) symbol after the phrase, in my post, and add this sentence: “This is the registered trademark of Susan Jeffers, Ph.D. and is used with her permission.”

Yeah. I’m not gonna do that.

I find it unbelievable that a common phrase (that was used way before it was the title of any book) can be trademarked. We’re not talking about the names of products … we’re talking about the English language. You know, the words many of us use for such things as … talking, and writing, and general communication? Perhaps I’m a little behind the times, but is it really possible to claim whole chunks of the language, and force people to get permission to use the language, just in everyday speech?

What if this were taken to an extreme? What if some billionaire (say, Bill Gates) decided to start trademarking thousands and thousands of phrases, so that he could charge us for each use, or so that we’d have to link back to the Microsoft homepage with each reference? The language, in this scenario, could be entirely privatized if we allow this sort of thing.

So, while this post is probably ill-advised (and yes, I realize that I’m actually giving publicity to Ms. Jeffers), I have to object. I think we have a duty, as writers and bloggers and speakers of the English language, to defend our rights to … words. Free speech is a bit of an important concept, I think.

As an aside, I think the idea of jealously protecting copyright and trademarks, in this digital age, is outdated and ignorant. You want your ideas to spread, and you should encourage people to spread your ideas, not put up all kinds of boundaries and restrictions and obstacles to that being done. This blog, for example, is Uncopyrighted, and will always be free, because I want people to spread my posts and ideas. I think it’s actually good for me as a writer, and it’s (not insignificantly) better for the writing community in general if we can share each others’ work freely. I’m hoping that with posts like this, and the good work of thousands of other like-minded people, the old mindset of fencing off ideas and language will slowly change.

So, no, I will not be adding a Registered Trademark symbol to the previous post. And no, I won’t be adding a phrase of legalese to the post. And no, I won’t even attribute the phrase or link to her book, as I wasn’t referring to the book. And no, I won’t remove the phrase.

I’d rather be sued.

Oh, and I’m not going to change the title of this post either. You’ll have to remove it from my cold, dead iMac.

Amazing.One of the most amazing sports stories that you’ll ever hear came out of Buena Vista, Florida this week. The Storm Lake Times reported on a 78-year old bowler who happened to bowl the first perfect game of his life. The catch? The bowler in question, Dale Davis, is a blind World War II veteran.

Davis saved his most memorable performance for the grand stage, as he bowled the twelve consecutive strikes in front of a big crowd at the All-League Playoffs in Alta, Florida.

At 115 pounds, Davis isn’t a big man, but that doesn’t stop him from using the heaviest bowling ball at Century Lanes. His form is perfect, even though his sight was taken away by macular degeneration some time ago.

Davis is no spring chicken to the sport of bowling. He got his start more than 65 years ago, when he took a job as a pin setter to make a little bit of extra cash as a kid. Eventually, that led Davis to a successful tenure as a player, as he routinely competed in tournaments, even pocketing good money for some of his better performances.

Davis spent a good portion of his life living in California, but made the decision to move back to his native Alta because of the easier living and his family ties. He has one sister, Thelma Sherwood, who makes life a little easier for him.

Davis leaned upon the support of that sister to rekindle his love for bowling. After losing his eyesight almost completely in 1997, he quit bowling for a while. Sherwood encouraged him to pick up the game again and amazingly, Davis boasts a solid 188 average at this time.

Though his eyesight is nearly gone, he can tilt his head to the side just enough to align himself correctly in the lane. From there, his success depends more upon repetition and muscle memory.

In bowling the perfect game, Davis fulfilled one of his lifetime goals, and one of the most elusive goals for any bowler. He shows no signs of slowing down now, though. According to Davis, he should be able to do this again when he’s 90 years old.
